Details by artist:
Deuteronomy 8:7-8 – “God is bringing you into a good land…a land of wheat and barley…”
Matthew 6:11 – “Give us this day our daily bread.”
Wheat and barley were the two main cereals of Biblical Palestine. Wild oats and rye were present as weeds and were developed as crops wherever the other could not be relied upon for good yields. In the Old Testament times, the grains were pounded into flour, using a pestle and mortar. The flour was mixed with water, salt and leaven. Leaven (yeast) was not added for unleavened bread.
Bread was very significant in the Jewish tradition – from the unleavened bread eaten at Passover to remind the Jews of their flight from Egypt, to Jesus using this imagery in proclaiming “I am the bread of Life: he who comes to Me shall never hunger…” (John 6:35)
